yesterday a student asked “if i’m feeling down is it better for me to practice restoratives than take a nap like i usually do? my intuition says yes but i’m not sure why.”

well, if you need sleep you need sleep. there is a minimum amount that we need in order to function. sometimes however, restlessness keeps us from getting the sleep we need, and sometimes, we use sleep as a way to avoid discomfort. in both of these cases restorative yoga may serve you better than a nap. restorative (supported) yoga is empowering!

the practice of arranging support for the body and encouraging the alignment of body, breath and consciousness will be remembered by the mind, the brain, the muscles. the ability to pay attention to sensation, even when uncomfortable, and to facilitate a movement towards ease, is one that translates to asanas, decisions, and relationships. you can use the practice to restore a sense of joy and ease in your body and compassion in your convictions, with full awareness of having done it!

next restorative workshop is sat, march 31 at inner dance. come see for yourself!

last weekend i taught an expanded studies weekend for the inner dance teacher training program. what a dynamic and intelligent group! there is so much wisdom in the broad and varied experience of the participants. there is so much wisdom in our bodies. sometimes there is a gap between this wisdom and our ability to access it. practice listening to your body the way you would listen to learn any new language. start to identify repeating patterns, even expect them…
see how your thoughts and your actions align. choose wisely. body fluency will follow!
